Our mission is to make biology easier to engineer. Ginkgo is constructing, editing, and redesigning the living world in order to answer the globe’s growing challenges in health, energy, food, materials, and more. Our bioengineers make use of an in-house automated foundry for designing and building new organisms.
The Intellectual Property team works to develop, protect, and commercialize Ginkgo’s innovation. We help to structure and negotiate the IP terms of collaborations; work with our scientific teams to protect our inventions; and collaborate with our customers over intellectual property matters.
We’re looking for an intellectual property attorney with an understanding of the life sciences, patent prosecution, intellectual property transactions and licensing, and strategic patent issues. Your role will be critical to ensuring that Ginkgo’s inventions can be successfully partnered, commercialized, and protected.
Responsibilities:
You will support our four Senior Intellectual Property Counsel in:
- Preparing new patent applications
- Supervising patent prosecution
- Structuring IP terms of collaboration agreements and licenses
- Analyzing and advising on IP issues in license, material transfer, and nondisclosure agreements
- Engaging in legal aspects of customer relationship management
- Overseeing freedom-to-operate studies
Requirements
Minimum requirements:
- Admission to a state bar
- Life sciences undergraduate degree or equivalent experience
- Experience in conducting patent prosecution OR with drafting and interpreting licensing agreements
- A minimum of two years’ experience in a law firm
- Excellent written and oral communications skills

Preferred capabilities and experience:
- Admission to the patent bar
- Advanced degree in a life sciences field
- Experience in BOTH life science licensing negotiations AND patent prosecution
- 3-6 years’ experience in a law firm, or in a mixed law firm and in-house setting
- Familiar with foreign patent prosecution practices
- Residence within commuting distance of Boston
