General Position Summary:
Mason, Bruce & Girard (MB&G) is seeking an experienced part-time Forester to lead a project in southwest Idaho. This is an opportunity to work with non-industrial private forest landowners to restore fire resiliency across Southwest Idaho in Ada, Boise, Adams, and Valley Counties, reducing wildfire risk and improving forest health through planning, layout, and implementation oversight.
This role combines applied forestry, project management, and landowner engagement to deliver tangible wildfire resilience outcomes. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical forestry expertise, familiarity with Idaho’s forest practice regulations, and the ability to work independently while coordinating closely with our client and private landowners. This is a dynamic position for professionals who enjoy a balanced mix of field and office work: approximately 60% field / 40% office.
The project area is in Ada, Boise, Adams, and Valley Counties, Idaho. Preference will be given to applicants who live in these counties.

What Makes an Ideal Candidate?
You are a seasoned forestry professional who thrives in both field and office settings. You’re equally comfortable conducting landowner site visits, drafting NRCS-compliant Forest Management Plans, and coordinating with contractors on active treatment projects. You bring initiative, strong communication skills, and a commitment to collaborative, high-quality work that benefits landowners and landscapes alike.
Key Responsibilities
- Engage private forest landowners to assess goals, forest conditions, and wildfire risk.
- Develop NRCS-compliant Forest Management Plans (FMPs) and cost-share eligibility assessments.
- Conduct field inventories, mapping, and layout of forest treatment units.
- Prepare prescriptions, georeferenced maps, and permit documentation.
- Coordinate and oversee forest treatment implementation, ensuring adherence to prescriptions, safety, and environmental standards.
- Monitor and document project progress, including inspection reports and treatment summaries.
- Support landowners in contractor coordination and issue resolution during operations.
- Prepare monthly and annual reports summarizing activities, accomplishments, and recommendations.
- Use GIS for project mapping and analysis.
- Lead field crews and guide forest technicians.
- Serve as primary client contact.
Work Environment
- Approximately 60% field / 40% office (remote coordination and reporting).
- Fieldwork includes traversing steep, rugged terrain and working in diverse weather conditions.
- Frequent travel within the southwest Idaho project area is required; occasional overnight stays may occur.
- Part-time position, with approximately 20-30 hours per week.
Minimum Qualifications
- B.A./B.S. in Forestry, Natural Resources, or related field.
- 5+ years of professional forestry or natural resource experience, ideally in Idaho or the Intermountain West.
- Experience preparing NRCS-compliant Forest Management Plans and conducting field inventories.
- Skilled in forest layout, timber marking, silvicultural prescription writing, and operator oversight.
- Competency in Microsoft Office and Esri ArcGIS.
- Excellent communicator and enthusiastic team player.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle for fieldwork.
- Ability to complete physically demanding fieldwork in challenging terrain.
